  • guess they're not allowed to imply that they had sex, in a high school production... or Lt. Cable take off his shirt? Great voice tho...

  • hah as much as we wanted to imply that, yes you are correct.

And my taking my shirt off would not have done myself, or the audience any favors...

  • Why wasn't a real Oriental cast as Liat?

  • Maybe, just MAYBE because none auditioned.

  • In some respects, there are compromises at work here, as you point out. But remember that this is a high school production. The goal here is primarily educational, to teach these kids about performing and theatre. Almost any play performed by high school kids will involve some compromises. Should high schools refrain from producing shows?

  • I'm sorry but in theatre you need actors who can sing. not singers that can so called "act". Great voice! i love what the musical director did with the movement of the song. it's just the acting isn't the greatest. Great job though! i just played Cable actually and i wish our musical director did something similar because that seemed easier than the original where it is very ploddish

  • @applejuice255 You're so lucky. The theatre company I'm auditioning with require that all actors auditioning for the part of Cable sing this song with their shirt off. Not that I'm worried ;)

  • @mindspring57 Woah. When you are doing a High school production they have to make compromise. As weird as it is, there is a very small pool of kids willing to do musicals in high school. So if the casting director had a very small group to select from without an Asian, then they had to pick what was best talent wise of who could play an Asian. Im sure they didnt just drop that storyline of the MUSICAL. And you didnt lose that much of the musical with him not wearing a shirt. Same story.

  • he did a nice job -- and the male lead actors in musicals often get the fringe benefits of serenading lovely ladies-- Not a bad gig is it? Even Pinza knew that[although he had the Frenchman's role in South Pacific ]

  • @MrStoldt Just pretend at best that she is Eurasian

  • I agree, she is quite nice, but the story was about multiracial relationships

  • this kid has a great voice! the set....meh not too great...and neither the acting..but the voice!!! great!!!!

  • The young actor performed the song very well. He has a great voice.

    This scene was well done.

  • Performing the play under these circumstances is pointless. If Cable and Liat are the same race, a major theme of the movie is missing, which was the portrayal of prejudice against multiracial relationships. If there are no Asians at the school, then Liat should be played by a black girl. Also, the Cable role needs to be played shirtless. If he is not comfortable being shirtless, they need to find someone who is. If the faculty is too prudish to permit it, they need to find another play.
