Zelaya Holds Up in Brazilian Embassy

The mood in the Honduran capital of Tegucigalpa is calm, but tense.

Honduran troops and police continue to guard the Brazilian embassy where ousted President Manuel Zelaya remains holed up after sneaking back into the country on Monday.

These Reuters photographs show Zelaya inside the embassy on Thursday giving a news conference. This was a day before thousands of Zelaya supporters marched through the city toward the Brazilian embassy, but were stopped by riot police who made several arrests. No injuries were reported.

Meanwhile, some clues on how the ousted Zelaya was able to get back into the country.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez — in New York for the General Assembly — spoke while attending an Oliver Stone movie premier alongside Bolivian President Evo Morales.

It was an operation of trickery and you know they record us. I started calling people. I called you (pointing to Morales) and I said, Well, me and Zelaya will see you in New York. And then I called Zelaya and said I will see you in New York', and the plane with Zelaya left. They followed him by satellite, the Pentagon, and Zelaya at one point or another disappeared. And he continued on — at one point he was in the trunk of a car, then a tractor, supported by the people. Some soldiers supported him and he arrived there to the heart of his country."

Chavez added that Zelaya told him that if he is to die, he will die in Tegucigalpa.
