In discussing the tragedy of the recent suicides by gay teens and bullying in schools I played a clip from the leader of the Mormon Church, Boyd Packer, attacking homosexuality and made the point that this hate from the pulpit is what fuels both the suicides and the violence against LGBT people. James from Louisiana, a self-described Christian, called in to say that it was wrong to point the finger at the churches even though he does people homosexuals are going to hell. I was not in the mood for this crap, not today.

  • My interpretation of a xtian reading the bible:

Kill those that work on the Sabbath...turn page

Kill you kids if they talk back...turn the page

Kill your wife on your wedding night if she is not a virgin...turn page

Hate homosexuals...ah, finally something I can use!

  • How can anyone in the LGBT community vote republican? It is like a termite going to work for Terminex.

  • Actually gay people hate gay people. Look at the gay culture. I cannot believe Michael Signorile and Dan Savage are some of very few people who publicly talk about these issues.

The few gays in the media and priests and preachers don't speak for all Christians or gays or whatever. Signorile is a typical American zealot.

  • The bible does NOT talk about homosexual relationships...if you have not taken hermeneutics you have NO business interpreting the bible..

  • "As a Christian" This does not make you a good human being

  • i'm straight and i would never judge others for who they love. it's not my place. i don't believe they are going to hell. love is love. we're taught to love, not hate. i support gay marriage. i would much rather be condemned for the love i have than the hate that i'm capable of...

  • Bullying of gay people would not stop if churches stopped preaching against it. There will always be the "different" factor. Only 2-3% of the population is gay, and such small minorities will probably always be picked on.

I think a lot of it also has to do with the societal pressure for men to be masculine and women to be feminine and feminine men or masculine women end up getting viewed as inferior.

That's not to say that the churches don't play a major role in it.

  • EPRVa62 sounds like a 7th Day Adventist who is scared to death of Galatians.

  • The gist of this conversation was " I am a Christian who cherry picks out 'sins' that apply to those who I want to marginalize and demean while I ignore or excuse any that would apply to myself. But I discriminate and insult you politely - so how dare you blame me."

  • This made my day. A very well articulated response to the typical argument of all Christians. They think saying in an even tone "I disagree with your lifestyle "choice" but I would never bully a kid so how dare you blame me and my church for having any part in these suicides" is a convincing argument. This is not respect for lgbt individuals.

  • Thank you for speaking out against the real perpetrators of these gay suicides and gay bullying.

  • @abmindprof Jesus also said in Matt 5:17-18 that he came to fulfill the laws not to codemn the laws. So all of the laws of the Old test carry over. It's amazing how many times I have pointed this out to someone while they were stuffing their face with a ham biscuit. LOL
