3000 Tamils killed within 10 days

The events of July 1983 are poignant for the entire Tamil population around the world. Between July 24 and 29, Tamils were systematically targeted with violence in Colombo and many other parts of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lankan Governments officials categorized the violence as uncontrollable race riots instigated by the killing of 13 Sinhala soldiers on the night of July 23. However, history and the course of events during Black July illustrate the Sri Lankan Governments undeniable involvement in the genocidal acts against Tamils.

July 24 (Day 1): At 1 oclock in the morning of July 24, the army rounded up hundreds of Tamils in Trincomalee, Mannar, and Vavuniya in the Northeast who had fled the anti-Tamil riots of 1977 and 1981. These Tamils were forcibly taken and left without possessions in the central hills.

Before the riots broke out in Colombo, the army in Jaffna went on rampage killing 51 innocent Tamil civilians. In Trincomalee, similar violence broke out as members of the Navy randomly shot at civilians and burnt down Tamil property.

In the evening in Colombo, the state funeral was being organized for the soldiers. Thousands of people arrived at the cemetery but the bodies failed to appear. After waiting several hours, much of the crowd objecting the burial in Kanatte and demanded the bodies to be returned to the next of kin. As the large crowd began to leave the grave, a new group of people (identified as government gangs) entered the Borella junction and raised antiTamil cries. As the anti-government cry subsided and anti-Tamil cries became dominant, arson and murdering of Tamils broke out.

July 25 (Day 2): After the midnight lull, mobs were led by people with voter registration lists in hand torched Tamil homes, looted and destroyed Tamil businesses. All traffic was searched, and any Tamils found were killed, maimed, or burned alive. Cyril Matthew, Minister of Industries, was witnessed directly pinpointing shops to be burned down.

  • so ur saying Mahinda is gay???

  • If anyone paid dearly for the 1983 riots it was the Sinhalese. The economy was hit, tourism declined, some hotels even today cannot recover the losses accumulated. The LTTE which was a small party like "Sinhala Urumaya" grew into a large army.

The 1983 was such a blessing to the LTTE that they begged for more. But the Sinhala people did not repeat their mistake. The Sinhala people have already suffered for the sins of 1983.

  • @sjcrox99 How can we forget the past when not a single perpetrator was brought to justice and the governement and media does everything to obscure and hide these events while they hunt down and prosecute the few victims who took up arms (not that I support the LTTE) and splash their terrorist acts all over the news in order to villafy an already victimised community? And its not just the past, the injustices and atrocities continued happening well up to 2009 but never made the headlines

  • @josephperera Im sorry but I disagree. Their has not been a single prosecution to this day, and the persecution, injustices and crimes against humanity didnt end with Black July. Their are reports of rapes, sexual torture, abductions and murders being commited against Tamil rights activists and random civilians under the pretext of 'fighting terrorism'. And while LTTE crimes make headlines accross the country, governement and nationalist crimes go unpunished and unheard of.

  • My dad was in Colombo at this time, he was tamil. He told me that he was in his garage and the sinhalese people were yelling in sinhala, '' where are you! we're gonna burn you!'' Luckily, they left. 2 days later, my dad went inside the house to check what is left, everything he had was looted, tv's....photoalbums burned.... e.t.c. I am so lucky to be alive right now. My dad made it back to Jaffna and took the flight to Canada for a better life. never forget 83, if you were a Sri Lankan tamil

  • being a sinhalese... i 'm really sad about our history....we admit that we didnt properly tra tamils....but however ..evry sihlaese didnot act like this.....most of these sihnalese came to rescue tamils..

for example....my grandparents kept a tamil family under their protection for about two months....

it's time for us to forget about our past.....it is time for us to ask pardon and to forgive others.....it's our duty to look after tamil people in Sri Lanka and now we are doing it....

  • This is totally deface of what had happened. This was all state sponsored by J R JAYAWARDENA and his gang of criminals.Only a handful of thugs involved in this and not the majority sinhalese.

  • This is very very sad, this is the worst thing that Sinhalese has done, killing innocent Tamil people just because LTTE killed 13 Sinhalese soldiers in Jaffna, I am half Sinhalese and half Muslim and as half Sinhalese, I am deeply ashamed of what these rogues did. May the Tamils who died in this massacre, rip.

  • all the fools tht think the LTTE were created out of nowhere...think again...our leader created his army on the basis of the peaceful efforts of our elders...the Vaddukkodai Referendum was administered and because of the violent racist sinhala gov, we were forced to pik up arms!!! Look at wht they did to our people!!! We will gain TAMIL EELAM where our TAMIL PEOPLE will be appreciated for the precious nation we are...

  • oh hell ya mf, they will definitely pay, just wait and see...
