Originally called Chinto, this kata is named after a Chinese sailor called Chinto, whom fought the cheif bodyguard of the Okinawan King after his ship grounded there.
'Chinto' was named 'the fighter to the East' when karate was established in Okinawa but was renamed to Gankaku which means 'crane on a rock', possibly to avoid anti-chinese sentiment at the time. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gankaku
