In December of 2008, I was enlisted by Marty Sammon and Michael Cristol to record a "sitdown" type of interview with, who Michael fondly refers to as , an "almost famous" guitarist named DOUG McDONALD. Doug, the "ARKANSAS RAZORBACK" is a blues musician/guitarist who has played in the shadow of some of the greatest blues artists ever. He has played with the best, including Phil Guy (R.I.P.), and his big brother, Buddy, as well as Fenton Robinson, Son Seals, Junior Wells, Jimmy Reed, Albert King, the Chi-Lites, and an array of others too long to list. Marty, Michael, and I were finally able to get the elusive, and versatile artist to agree to a friendly little "sitdown" during a show at Vino Tinto, a little establishment in Oaklawn, Il., which is run by Melissa Beslic and her sister Sara. Doug was a natural and soon got very comfortable, and sometimes emotional, talking about his background and rise to NEAR stardom.
I feel blessed to call Doug a friend and mentor. He really taught me a lot about how to play guitar. He is a true blues master and a great guy. Thanks Wall-Eye !!! When Mike's mentions RJ.....he's talking about me. lol. Peace, RJ Howson
