Before Adderall and all the rest of stimulants there was cocaine, when it was real cocaine.
Airplane pilots, surgeons and all the professionals who needed acute concentration, used cocaine. So this stimulant thing going on, has always been going on. Only problem, children today, don't have parents anymore so the stimulant addiction problem has now been upgraded or downgraded, whatever you like best, to kids.
