Cormorant Fishing in Yangshuo, China

It doesn't look like a very efficient method of fishing to me...but what do I know, eh?

It's a great way to catch small fish that won't take a hook, in an area where you'll lose a net on rocks and debris everytime you throw it in.

This is a practice for tourists only, and has been superseded by trawlers and large nets etc.

It does hurt the bird.

TO ALL THOSE SAYING THIS IS SICK OR CRUEL: cormorants have a lot of loose skin around their neck, to allow them to swallow fish whole. the snare is tied LOOSELY around their necks, and the cormorants can still swallow small fish , they bring the larger fish (which the snare stops them from swallowing) back to the boat.

So what are they doing with the little tiny fish? As far as I know, cormerants have no problem surviving on their own.

How do they catch the cormerants?

I think I might've gone on the exact same tour, it was at night time at a river in yangshuo. I saw it on my school's trip to China, the cormorants were pretty amazing!
