Best I can tell, something/someone becomes incredibly and unexpectedly famous. After being popular for some time, he/it becomes bloated, narcissistic, and useless, to the point that he/it eventually becomes a parody of the original and is no longer adored by anyone.
Since the popular thing/man is still very self-important, Coulton (mockingly?) plays it off as though everyone has forsaken a god, and the 'fools' should be forgiven by the 'all-wise' thing/person.
