You would think that the way winter envelopes, blankets everything, pulls the world together into a singularity, I would not need to go far to find ideas for paintings, and yet, while I feel that same excitement having either cross country skied or snow-shoed out deep into the woods losing myself, first in the light, (the life of everything it touches), then the utter silence, followed by the trees themselves crackling, groaning and swaying with the wind (which can be heard rushing on by above the treetops) just being alive and out there does yield a feast of ideas/plans drawings which while made, many of which only live on in the land of hope that the artist will get around to them, but few actually get executed. In a way its a lot like Paris; nomatter where I stand there is beauty all around me, and even though I can not only get virtually/naturally high taking it all in, and relish my time in doing it, its hours before I find something that I absolutely just have to paint and during these hours I am more and more finding that time itself to be the most valuable of all things. Never having just seen something and then gone ahead and painted it I find each work is an experience, beginning with the idea, which once begun opens up possibilities and complexities not visible initially, struggles and arguments back and forth between myself and the ongoing work about the absoluteness of what will find its way into the painting (although I in no way want to join that crowd that goes on about the agony they suffer while painting/writing, etc. you have to be insane from the get-go to want to paint in the first place, so why complain about it afterwards) - till finally I have the experience in front of me, and
after it is sold, the experience alive inside me.

And a Happy New Year to you, Knitntea; to me it is more like winter is awesome, & on the days i make an effort i can see the magic in what i normally pass by as ordinary. micheal

Happy New year 123olof, thanks for taking the time to stop and look.
winter is my favourite season. until the spring. there is a multifaceted magical depth to winter that, well, just takes my breath away when i am out there; i may not know exactly where i am going with all my explorations of winter, but it sure is fun getting lost in it. i hope that shows in the work. micheal

Hi Gailmetal, thanks for seeing.
most watercolorists, are really just hobbyists, all slaves to the same techniques. reduce everything they see to a series of washes; stand back of 50 of them & look; outside of color & subject matter choices they are all the same. in its simplest form, i at least reverse that, inventing new techniques to express what i see/feel is there.

Hi 2baSelkie, thanks for seeing. ...as per no comments, i also don't see anyone out there when i am painting in the winter. There seems to be no end to the depth winter can be explored visually, we have been lucky enough to put to paper/panel
most of what we enjoyed discovering for ourselves. micheal
