Having sampled the Deltic to Oban the day before, it was time to head home to London on board an HST.
We start at Dundee and in rolls an HST in the classic GNER livery (no rubbish National Express white back then) and both power cars were Valentas! Vals were slowly getting replaced by MTU engines so this was a real bonus.
We leave Dundee on the 11:02 to Kings Cross and immediately cross the Tay Bridge, this time in better light conditions as the Deltic trip the day before was in the dark on each occasion we crossed it. We see the departure from Leuchars with some superb Valenta thrash before crossing the windy Forth Rail Bridge.
Due to engineering works on the East Coast Main Line our HST was diverted down the West Coast Main Line. After Edinburgh we made our way to Carlisle where there was time to stretch our legs. Another GNER HST was heading northbound so this gave us the rare sight of two East Coast sets side by side at a West Coast station. Our next port of call was Newcastle with another gut busting departure. Sadly my battery gave up the ghost here but the light was fading fast thanks to the bad weather so I didn't miss much.
