I think that the music is Korean pansori opera. Pansori is a traditional form of opera from Korea; it's performed by one singer and a drummer, who also plays a bamboo flute. Pansori usually tells one of five classic stories and can last upwards of eight hours. I saw it at the WOMAD festival in 2006, and it was amazing. There's more information about it on Wikipedia.
