Sales people end-up at trade shows without any training. Yes they have been selling but trade shows are more like retail selling. Yes, they have bought enough over the years from retail sales people so they think how tough can it be. Management needs feet on the floor right away and they feel they have experienced sales people that can handle it.
However, if you're the sales person and on commission, you'll learn quickly that trade show prospecting and selling requires skills that you never learned. Yes, people will look with interest because it's there and flashy, but to qualify quickly get those with potential to commit to a meeting or a referral is very different. This is a skill that needs to be learned.
Now if you're in management the same holds true - your ROI for the tradeshow will be in the conversions to purchases, meetings and referrals. Most sales people will not take the time to train themselves. So if you want your staff to produce for you, you'll have to make the training investment.
