BARNSTABLE - A 39-year-old man wanted for allegedly kidnapping a Hopkinton woman will be arraigned in Barnstable District Court this morning after leading police on a high-speed chase last night.

Barnstable police said Phillip DePasquale allegedly smashed into a detective's car in an attempt to get away when the chase began on Main Street in Hyannis around 9 p.m.

DePasquale was led by officers into district court in Barnstable Village at about 9 this morning.

DePasquale was the focus of a statewide police search yesterday for his alleged role in the kidnapping of a mentally disabled in Hopkinton woman on January 26, according to police. The state police violent fugitive squad had been searching for him and he was on the state's most wanted list.

DePasquale, who knows the woman, is accused of tying and gagging her in an abandoned trailer after he persuaded her to accompany him to an ATM and get money from her account. The woman was able to free herself after several hours and walked through a snowstorm to get help, police said.

Sgt. Michael Riley said detectives spotted DePasquale last night during a six-hour surveillance, part of an investigation into numerous smash and grabs from motor vehicles reported in Yarmouth and Hyannis over the past couple of days.

Detective Lt. Sean Balcom and and Detective John York spotted a man breaking into a car at Pizzeria Uno on Route 132 and followed as he drove away. They attempted to stop him on Main Street, near Pleasant Street, but the car sped away and at one point smashed into the front passenger side of Balcom's cruiser, Riley said.

The chase led police down Yarmouth Road, across Route 28 and then to Route 6 west.

State trooper Randall Carlson saw the vehicle - a 1998 Nissan Altima - near Exit 6 in Barnstable and began to chase it when the operator refused to stop, according to a state police press release this morning.

Pursuit speeds reached up to 100 mph, Riley said.

The driver attempted to take the Exit 4 off-ramp in Sandwich, but failed to negotiate the ramp, the state police said. The car traveled across the grassy infield, crossed over the westbound on-ramp and crashed into a tree. The driver was taken into custody and turned over to Barnstable police.

Among the charges DePasquale faces: three counts of breaking and entering into a motor vehicle; two counts of larceny over $250; possession of a stolen motor vehicle; operating with a revoked driver's license; operating to endanger; failure to stop for a police officer; leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident with property damage; and possession of burglarious tools.

Depasquale is also wanted on warrants issued out of Dudley District Court for kidnapping, assault and battery on a handicapped person, larceny of a motor vehicle and three counts of credit card fraud. He will eventually be returned to Worcester County to face those charges, the state police said.

DePasquale was convicted in 1995 of manslaughter and sentenced to 10 to 12 years in prison. He was held over night at the Barnstable police station on $250,000 bail.
