Larry Smarr discusses the state of the art in supercomputing, with a focus on how current computation compares to the human brain and when supercomputers will surpass human processing power. Current supercomputers are estimated to match the human visual cortex and will reach human brain's computational ability within the next twenty years.
extremely interesting video ...

@robotracking actually moores law ends around 2025-30 then of course there's the atom comps.....

Fascinating - yeah, in priciple. But the talk ends up in almost an hour of drivel. Unfortunately that seems to be true for the majority of videos from this channel. Strange... Never would have expected this.

Thanks for uploading this talk.

Not according to Moores Law. We have maybe 5 or 10 more years, by then the Microchip will be fazed out of existence, due to the processor in the chip, being to small to make and copy. Then what ? Maybe we can build Atom Computers, in fact they have already built an Atom Computer, but it only has 6 atoms in it, it did a sum 5 x 15, now you may say thats simple, but the guys only used Atoms to do the sum. Any Atom computer will make these supercomputers look like they belong in the stone age.

Mmm extremely disappointing conference I think too. It started really interesting but then shifted to that HD video transfer which is not the topic at all. Also not even a mention of reversing computing that might change the deal with the amount of energy used to compute.

Far exceeding the capabilities of the human body in the very near future? Sounds to me like WE are the gods...

The SU videos are great; quality is good, but this particular one was very disappointing as it was mostly content-free. Summary: some research network connections can now exceed the effective bandwidth of human visual capabilities. So now scientists can stare at complex pictures at the same time while sitting in different places (like FTP, only you are seeing the picture from the other labe, not from your own disk, big whup). The other killer app is having politicians in the same virtual room.
