He's typecast now. It's a casualty of the Sopranos' awesome casting, I mean, Little Steven van Zandt had never acted a day in his life before he played Silvio, and in real life he's a bald gypsy/hippie who plays rock guitar for Bruce Springsteen. He's nothing like Silvio, just like James is nothing like Tony and Imperioli is nothing like Chris, but they're all Italians from Jersey who crafted ultra-Alpha Male goombah alternate personalities just from movies and cultural memory.

He played the role for too long to be able to shift the character completely of him that's why actors and actresses don't like to do the same TV show for a pro longed period of time as it sometimes limit future projects.
