It is the mother who is using the adjective to describe her daughter. She may refer to how she feels in respect to her daughter.

I disagree with your response. "Satisfactory" *is* a strange adjective to use for people. That's why the daughters in the video laugh when their mother says this. In your example, John's *results* were satisfactory, not John himself.

Thank you, realenglish 1!
I have a question. Isn't 'satisfactory' a strange adjective to use for persons?

'Satisfactory" is fine for describing people. For example, Mary got 90% on her test, but John only got 70%. In this situation, John, AND his results, are satisfactory but not good.

Thank you very much,
I didn't know the adjective "witty".
Théodore, from Pau, France.

Hi Théo, J'habite en France aussi, in a little village called Carro, near Marseille, but i'm from New Jersey. The Real English site tries to explain "witty"( in lesson 10), with English text and a picture, but I guess you simply looked in a bilingual dictionary. Best wishes! Mike
