Formula One uses V8 with TINY displacement. 2.4 litres. A cadillac northstar is a 4.2. The mustang GT has a 5.0. The formula one engines also rev up to 15000 rpm though... the caddy and ford combined probably can't come up with a redline that high. Gotta get that power somehow. Smaller parts moving faster works wonders. Wear and tear is a ***** though...

Murciélagos come with a 6.2 or 6.5 V12. We're looking at just over 500cc per cylinder. Max HP in some is achieved at around 8000 rpm.
The most recent corvette has a 6.0 V8 (thats 750cc, or 50% more per cylinder) which gets max HP at around 6000 rpm in the LS2 version.
Not making any quality judgments here.
Its the same reason harleys sound different than crotch rockets.

Despite my personal feelings of Lamborghini vehicles,(not a fan) that sound was absolutely intoxicating, I would have loved to see that in person. SOUNDS FANTASTIC
