This is about a different kind of artist, one who carries a weapon and a sketchbook into battle. Every service, at least since the Mexican-American War, has enlisted a small cadre of men who can not only fight but can also witness the large and small facets of war, then translate those memories to paper and canvas. The Army has its artists. The Navy has them. The Marines. And most enemy forces, as well. We will be looking at various wars over the next few days and how they were covered by the men and women who carried pencils and brushes into battle. Music here is Beethoven's Fifth, with its booming Morse code "Dot-dot-dot-DAH" beginning, which was picked up by various underground groups as a way of signaling "V for Victory."

  • Ah more good stuff!

  • And among the last for awhile. I caught a bug in Houston, and am slow getting over it.

  • 7:14 looks like mobilized National Guard regiments including NY and the Arizona Bushmasters against Yamashitas' forces in the Northern Luzon "mopping up" campaign 1944-5. My Uncle Jack was there.
