  • How is this making the dog "neurotic"?

It gives the dog a job (and BCs *without* jobs are the one's more likely to be neurotic) and the dog gets to use some of the behaviors it would working stock.

  • What fun! Wish I could do this with my aussies, but they pop every large ball that I've found, except for basketballs, but these can be a big hard on their noses. Thanks for sharing it!

  • This looks like an awesome sport for herding/working breeds!

  • @citydog Couldn't agree with you more! The dog is actually extremely intent on following his handler's commands. He even waits to start until given the signal to do so!

  • @citydog Yeah, we have a border collie/ lab mix and he gets all excited and he's energetic with out a job. The job he gets the most often is to pull someone on a bike.

  • @technologicaldreamer

I would suspect that a burst-resistant exercise ball would do the trick. That appears to be what they're using here anyway. That is, as long as they aren't actively biting. I believe that part of this sport involves a strict technique of "nosing." If the dogs are doing it right, I'd say it would be impossible to pop them.

  • This looks like wonderful fun for a herding dog. I must get some exercise balls.

  • @azmauigirl lol i know how u feel every bouncy ball ive bought for my aussies sooner or later gets popped. Wish i could get one of these balls for mine wonder if they are tougher...

  • What great ideas! I'm going to try them as soon as I get the inflatable balls you mention. Thanks so much!

  • @azmauigirl You can teach not to pop the balls. I used the inflatable beach balls because they are cheap - about $1 each. First I clicker train a "push" on my hand and then an object. Then I inflate the beach ball only part way. I hold it under my arm and compress it so it is more or less ball shaped. And I clicker train a push on that. For a foot touch or attempt to bite remove the ball to the top of the table and ignore for 15 seconds. Gradually move to the ground. And no more ball play

  • I am getting my exercise ball ito the back garden and starting practice now so I am ahead when it hits Australia!!!
