As part of a larger project involving timelapse video, I developed a technique that uses motion detection to skip over frames where nothing is happening.

A practical application is to use this with footage shot from a train or a car, since it will skip over stops at train stations or stop lights.

The video shows this technique applied on the left, and the original video shortened to the same duration on the right. In the left-hand video, stops at the station are almost entirely skipped, allowing more frames to be dedicated to the transit between stations.
