Filmmaker Aishah Shahidah Simmons talks about issues faced by black lesbians due to homophobia...part of a new documentary on lesbians of African descent...coming soon!.

"black./womyn.:conversations..." will be a feature length docu-film that will concern lesbians of African descent living in the U.S. It will include over 50 interviews with black lesbians of all ages /classes /nationalities/locations discussing a variety of topics including coming out, sexuality and religion, love and relationships, patriarchy, visibility in media, among others as well as a series of short vignettes representing the topics discussed. I'm hoping to provide a film that can encourage progressive dialogue between people on dealing with the image of the black lesbian and the stereotype that come with who black lesbians are portrayed to be. I hope to encourage conversation between black lesbians dealing with class and age, and the lack of communication between these groups and how that affects the overall unity between black lesbians as a group in society.

  • YOu kknow what she rigt. The thing that upsets me an I feel pushes many gays and lesbians away from religion is the fact that someone is elling you that GOD loves everyone but he will not love you for following your heart no matter the gender

  • Thank you for bringing these videos to us. They open up so many feelings I can never express.

  • @loversarelunatics well said. i couldn't agree with you more! it wasn't until i found a therapist and worked through many, many issues that i started to feel okay with who i am. and that means ALL of who i am. you are so right when you spoke on holding things in for so long and having them all come at you at once. i would encourage my lesbian sisters who are struggling to seek help and find a good, loving support system.

  • this is the truth. i a black woman and a lesbian. i need a therapist and thank God i have one. but how many people are out there who need support and are lacking it? people think that when we have pride and pretend we can get by but it doesnt work that way. to get through an issue you have to go through it. you have to face it. and it can be overwhelming if you've held things in for so long and they all come at you at once. its frightening.

  • wow she really hit home for me

  • Cede some of your hate and allow love to blossom. What would the world be like without your hate, fear, discrimination and general RIDICuLosity?...yeah, I created a word just for you hypocrits...Live and let live. The Christ I know is a loving, kind and generous Spirit. Get a hobby...stitch witchery, pottery, gardening...something other than hatin'!

  • No, really?....How can christians preach hell and damnation in this life and curses in the next and profess to really know Christ? If Christ is anything like the hypocrits that point fingers at everyone they deem "sinful"...we are all headed for damnation, especially the morons spouting religious rhetoric.
