One might not think a Nepalese young man and a Liberian young woman would have much in common. But then one might meet Moti Kharel and Fatu Sanoe — both 18 years old, both high school seniors in the New York City schools, and both refugees. In 2006, Moti fled the same dangers of war and oppression in his native Nepal that Fatu had escaped in her homeland of Liberia, by way of Guinea, a year earlier. They met at the International Rescue Committee's summer camp for refugee youth and sat down afterward to talk about adjusting to their new lives in the U.S. They discussed what was different: unfamiliar food and fashions, feeling at once shy and happy, the dream of an American paradise and the realities of hard work. And they shared thoughts on whats always the same: human potential, change, and the chance to become both who you are and someone new.
