RBS 450 in Northern Ireland

ABS Trenchless GmbH carried out a Demonstration of the ABS Rope Bursting System in June 2011 in Co. Armagh, Northern Ireland, replacing the exist-ing 6" Spun Iron Pipe with 225mm OD HDPE pipe.

A 200m long section of works was identified, which included a 20º bend, as an appropriate section to demonstrate the RBS systems pulling capability and its ability to negotiate any deviation in line or level.

A 3m x 1.5m "Bursting Pit" was excavated to below the invert of the existing pipe and "stoned up". The existing pipe was then broken out and removed from the trench.
A rigid plastic line locally called a "Cobra" was pushed through, from the starter pit, located 200m from the bursting pit. The "Cobra" then had an auxiliary rope attached and was pulled back to the starter pit.

The RBS 450 was placed into the Bursting Pit. The Hydraulic Hoses were connected to the Power-pack and the wire rope from the winch fed through the RBS 450 unit. The wire rope was connected to the auxiliary rope and the small petrol driven Winch pulled back the wire rope to the starter pit.

Following connection of the wire rope to the bursting assembly, the rope bursting process commenced. Along the route, a pit had been excavated at 55m for a connection to an adjacent Road. This offered a chance to see the bursting assembly "bursting" through the ground.

The operation of the RBS 450 unit took place remotely from an adjacent low wheel base trailer that accommodated the Winch, Remote Control Module and the Power-pack. This arrangement was advantageous as it reduced mobilisation and demobilisation times.

The bursting process took 3 Hrs 10 minutes to pull 200m of 225mm OD Pipe. The bursting assembly was then removed from the Bursting Pit and disassembled in preparation for demobilisation from site.
