Interesting movie, but a bit self indulgent of Alan Bennet. The film is set in a comprehensive school in 1983. Most unconvincing is the acceptance of homosexuality. Bennett's school is more like a fifties prep or grammar school. I was in VIth form in a comprehensive in 1983, and I was also gay. I can most definitely assure everyone it wasnt like this, or anything remotely like it.

@splinterbyrd PS the father of one of the younger victims stated in interview that it hurt him the way everyone just assumed they were all rent boys or similar, which certainly wasn't true of his own son

@arcadian78 google dennis nilsen for the full facts. at lest two of his victims were fathers, another a (straight) teenage runaway, another two were just a couple of ordinary students. I remember it happening; I don't recall ,many of the victims beng vilified, altho regarding nilsen himself the press certainly made much of him being gay

@splinterbyrd Well i've never actually heard on the various programmes about Nielson that most of his victims were straight,one that I saw less than a year ago they talked to two guys that managed to survive attacks by him,they were both homosexual and both said how they were vilified by the press for being gay and how the public acted like the guys that had been killed deserved it because they were gay,so im just going by survivors accounts,guys that were actually there.

@arcadian78 Well I don't know that it was QUITE that bad lol and (ironically given an agressively conservative government) it was then that things really moved on. But you're quite right, it was near impossible to be 'out' at school in 1983, and certainly the tabloids were hysterical about homosexuality. But most people were pretty appalled by Dennis Nielson, if only because most of his victims were in fact hapless straight men and boys. By the 90s, things were better.

@splinterbyrd That's quite right,I love the film especially the part when Posner is singing to Dakin but it's true that acceptance of homosexuality on that level wouldn't have existed then,in the early 1980's when Nielson was caught after killing X amount of homosexual men and cutting them up,most people in the U.K thought he had done them some kind of service ridding the world of such men,rather than feeling any compassion for the victims at all,thank goodness things have moved on slightly.
