@raginraptor not a subtraction technique, instead we train a classifier that can estimate the "activation" level of a particular brain pattern. The higher the activation of this pattern the more it is doing task A the lower the more it is doing task B, etc... This can be done with cognitive processes as well.
Do you use a subtraction technique? how are these motor signatures created in real time? Can it only be done with motor or sensory processes? What about cognitive event? can these be imaged in real time?
