The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial

My grandfather, Wulfrano M. Oreta, fought in World War 2. He was a Civil Engineer and an Officer in the "Fighting 41st" Division of the Philippine Army.

He was among the remaining Allied Forces surrounded at Bataan and driven to Corregidor Island until it fell to the Japanese. He suffered the infamous Death March and the Capas P.O.W. Camp - and survived to see the Allies' return and the liberation of the Philippines.

He passed away in December 1977, a retired Colonel, just 5 months before I was born.

Last Sunday, April 3, I brought my wife and sons to visit the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial. It's a beautiful monument to bravery.

On April 9, our "Araw ng Kagitingan" (Day of Valor), remember our troops and their sacrifices for this country. Would they be proud to see what it is today?
