  • Great stuff, man. You're ride has an absolutely beautiful tone...I love it. Speaking of which, I'm very curious about the lick you do at around 1:02. I've seen drummers do it before, but if you could tell me exactly what you were doing there that would be appreciated.! Check out the song Jellybelly by Smashing Pumpkins, it has a very similar fill in the intro that I'm trying to figure out, and I figured this would help. Any response would be much appreciated, great groove! :)

  • Thanks!

My rides is an Istanbul Agop Signature ride.

In that section I'm playing double stroke rolls on the snare while hitting ride in between the roll. Basically just fast doubles.

    Hope that helps.

All the best. Keep playing hard!

    Colin

  • Nice! It's great coming across a vid like this after having waded through so much sameness.

May I ask... just curious, because (no one has mentioned this!?!?)... I wonder where YOU are feeling the pulse as you play? Because I hear it both ways at different times, sometimes the BD as the anchor, other times I feel the BD as 4 underneath a strong 3. Were you just blowing here, not even thinking on that level, or did you intentionally set this rhythmic tension up? Either way... nice.

    Thanks Scott!

I was feeling the dotted quarter notes on the bass drum. Therefore the bass drum comes back to beat 1 every 3 bars. I was trying to keep 4 bar phrases which means beat one of every 4 bars doesn't get accented for a while... It really frees up creative ideas while improvising.

    All the best!

Yeah, like most grooves, its best to feel it instead of analyzing it. Just get into the vibe and have fun with it!

    thanks!

  • is that and SJC snare?

  • so fucking boring

  • do you have two sets of hihats on one stand?

  • @colinkingsmore So just rrllrrllrrll and the first stroke on the right hand is hitting the ride?

  • @colinkingsmore, neat... so the 4 over 3 thing. ("4 under 3" may be more accurate here!) But nice job at creating that tension / illusion.... and whether totally intended or not, that it flows out as smoothly as it does shows you have a really natural comfort with it. Great!

(I hope that, to others, this does not all sound pedantic or like academic over-analysis, because my impression is just the opposite: sure, it's 4v3 / dotted quarters, but it comes out very MUSICALLY. Always the point!)

  • wood rims for the win.
