Here is my experience at the 2011 Western States 100 Mile Endurance Run. 18,000ft of climbing, 21,000 ft of decent, all trails, 100 miles through the mountains of California in temperatures ranging from 40F to 95F.
My race didn't go so great, but I finished what I started.

A month later I won the Vermont 100 in 15 hours and 26 minutes when I was having a better day. Running 100 miles through the mountains is a serious adventure every time. Lots of up's and down's in 100 mile races, and it builds serious character.

This event in my life would not have been possible without the help of Maarten Remmers, Shawn Leonard, and Mike Oliva. Thanks guys, thanks for your help at WS100, I owe ya one.

Maarten Remmers, filming and editing.

Mike Oliva, crew and nose blowing for 38 miles

Shawn Leonard, crew, emotional support and helping with the trail trash I became over 21+ hours...

  • beautiful place!!!

  • Great effort Mike, really enjoyed that!

  • Great effort, Mike! To keep pressing on through such a bad day is all the more impressive. I am starting to go more raw, more vegan and more nutritarian, but in slow steps. To know that you can do what you do on such an uncompromising diet gives me great confidence as I continue to take those steps. Thanks!

  • $100 the bloating is due to the corn! Sure avocado + dates is no good mix, but I'm still convinced seeds are not meant to be eaten, especially gluten ones.

  • Dang! You're such an inspiration!!!! :) I respect the distance! nice

  • why tomatos?

  • great job, respect from germany...
