Dutch pianist Nicolas van Poucke was born in 1992 to musical parents. He began playing the piano at age 6 and entered the Young talents department of Royal Conservatory The Hague at age 9. His teachers where Marlies van Gent, Henk Ekkel and David Kuyken. Now Nicolas is pursuing a bachelor degree in music at the Conservatory of Amsterdam studying with Jan Wijn.
Other musical influences come from Murray Perahia whom he had the privalege to have some lessons with.
Nicolas also enjoys private theory lessons from Paul Scheepers and Martijn Hooning.

Nicolas has proven to be one of Hollands most promising young pianists. Having won first prizes and audience awards on both the Steinway Int. Piano Competition 2006 and the Princes Christina Competition 2006. He also won a prize for the best interpretation of a work by J.S. Bach at the European Union Piano Competition 2009. In 2010 during the YPF National Piano Competition he was awarded the top prize in his age category.

At age 14 Nicolas made his orchestral debut touring with Dutch Youth Orchestra through Holland and Germany performing Beethovens Piano concerto No. 1.
In 2009 he performed again with the Dutch Youth Orchestra together with Sophiko Simsive playing the Poulenc Double Concerto.
As a soloist Nicolas has performed in all major venues in the Netherlands and has perfomerd in Austria, Bulgaria, France, Germany, Greece, North America (New York, San Fransisco, Los Angeles), Canada and in the UK.
He participated in masterclasses by Pascal Devoyon, Jean-Claude Vanden Eynden, Gary Graffman, Robert McDonald, Maria Joao Pires, Menahem Pressler, Jean-Yves Thibaudet and at the Verbier Academy 2009 with Emanuel Ax, Dmitri Bashkirov and Stephen Kovacevich.

Beside imersing himself in the piano solo repetoire, Nicolas is very passionate about chamber music. He performs regularly with sister, cellist Ella van Poucke. Together they organize a very succesful chamber music series in the center of Amsterdam and will organized the very first EllaNi chamber music festival in late december and the first day of january 2010.
Among his chamber music partners are the Amsterdam Chamber Music Society, Christiaan Bor, Colin Carr, and the Rubens Quartet.
Nicolas has enjoyed chamber music coaching from many distinguished musicians like Gabor Tacakc-Nagy, Jeffery Kahane, Wu Han,
Claude Frank and Members of the Emerson, Orion and Borromeo Quartets.

Nicolas is very happy with the Steinway grand piano model O the Dutch National Music Intrument Foundation loans to him and has received grants from the prins Bernard Culture Foundation and the Van den Ende Foundation.

  • I think your interpretations would be more successful if you played a bit more restrained and let the music do the speaking! But this is wonderful playing and just a little criticism. Wish you a Merry Christmas!
