This is the ninth part of my video series on learning Hindi. We come now to more vocabulary, including, for the first time, the simplest verb "to be" and its conjugation. Pronunciation and gender (masc or fem) is stressed and is in IPA. My use of images from Internet is intended to be consistent with US Fair Use laws.

  • Should it be "yeh dil hai"? Shouldn't hai be at the end?

  • Normally Hindi is Subject-Object-Verb. But Subject-Verb-Object construct is also permissible.

  • NOTICE: Viewers, the Bollywood time is almost come! Please vote for one of your favorite Bollywood Hindi songs and we'll follow the lyrics to learn Hindi. I'll give you, say, 3 days to reply here itself. then I'll choose that song from the list which has the simplest lyrics.

  • The icon used for "bolna" was a bit ambiguous I think. If I did not already know Hindi I would have taken this for singing rather than speaking. :-)

  • you can say Sooraj as well, remember Hindi has 1M+ words...There are various words for one thing sometimes..

  • "Sooraj" is the modern Hindi word for sun. "Surya" is the word for sun borrowed from Sanskrit, and is more of a technical or academic word in Hindi. In everyday language, you would hear people say "sooraj", not "surya". The word "sooraj", however, comes from "surya".

English has similar examples. "Understand" is a native English word while "comprehend" is borrowed from French/Latin.

  • Sun is Surya in my dictionary, not Sooraj

  • What abotu Cahiyya Chaiyya from the film Dil Se? I lvoe that song! I vote for that!!!! oh or Jee Karda from Singh is Kinng please!!! Thanks, ur vids rock!

  • I can certainly see the Indo-European connection sometimes, especially with `people` - Log, In German Leute, Dutch lui/luiden (occasionaly), Russian Lyudi, English layman, very interesting.

  • Can you make these lessons into sound tracks so I can burn them and practice in my car?

  • eres un buen profesor rajan, sigue subiendo mas lecciones de hindi.
