In January 2006, UK Channel 4 broadcast The 100 Hottest Web Searches 2005 - a countdown of the most commonly searched words and phrases on the MSN UK search engine over the year. The phrase Aurora Borealis ranked 68th, beating Jamie Oliver, Tom Cruise and the general election!

The programme featured AuroraWatch - the internet-based alert service run by the Space Plasma Environment And Radio Science Group at Lancaster University. This free service uses real-time data from the SAMNET magnetometer network in order to alert subscribers when Aurora are likely to be seen from the UK. The short segment included me talking about what causes the Aurora Borealis and how the AuroraWatch system works.
