This guy is just a crazy idiot. Neither Satan, god, or his neighbor's dog are to blame. They should have just shot berkowitz on sight without jail or a trial. It would have preserved everyone's dignity and taken away from the ego boasting of his bullshit christians who pretend to save him.

Likewise, we could never be as a shining light on a hill if our value system was built on the delayed or deferred justice that the phrase "judge not" has come to be understood as inferring. "Lest you be judged" implies a humanistic value system corresponding to imperfect moral agents. Not the suspension of all rational thought.

If you believe in society's right to punish (and, by implication, judge) an individual, you acknowledge that society has a responsibility in raising its children to the standards it has set for itself. Therefore, it is hypocritical to kill in the name of justice/mercy But, it is also hypocritical to ask for forgiveness from society or its members because an outcast has found jesus in prison.
