Sprite Light was formulated partially with sugar, like many diet sodas from the 1970's. Sugar overcame the bitter aftertaste of saccharin (which is banned in Canada), or cyclamate (which is banned in the US, but was still used in Canadian diet sodas in the 1970's.) The "light" diet sodas disappeared when aspartame was approved for diet soda use in the early 1980's...aspartame didn't have the bitter aftertaste saccharin has. One US "light" diet soda was Pepsi Light, which was lemon flavored.
