A tribute to this auburn-haired minxish beauty (1925-1971) who is chiefly remembered for her role as Carmen Sternwood in "The Big Sleep" (1946). A popular 40s pin-up, she could also sing and dance, but her big screen career was virtually put to a stop by her three year marriage to Mickey Rooney which produced a son, Teddy Rooney (she was also briefly wed to producer A.C. Lyles in 1948). She married musician/actor Manuel Rojas in 1954, and they had two daughters, Tina and Tessa, but the couple divorced in 1965. She resumed her film work in the 50s but she found herself relegated to secondary roles and low-budget films. She worked periodically in television during this time and her last film was "Four Fast Guns" (1959). Martha passed away from cancer of the esophagus on November 2, 1971. I really think she could have gone on to bigger and better things had circumstances not gotten in the way. She was very effective onscreen as sensual, seductive yet somehow sweet young women.

@VALMARIESASK Yuppers. According to wikipedia: In the movie "The Big Sleep", Novelist Raymond Chandler said Martha Vickers (Carmen) overshadowed Lauren Bacall (Vivian) in their scenes together, which led the producers to delete much of Vickers' performance to enhance Bacall's.
I wish I could see those scenes.

I read Bacall and Bogey, had her scenes edited out of The Big Sleep because she was so HOT so much better than Becall! The Hollywood machinery of who is great.... Joke EH!

Martha was absolutely radiant in "The Big Sleep" in a supporting role. When I first began watching old movies on TV one of the first was "The Big Sleep" after which i was expecting that there would be other comparable Vickers vehicles to enjoy her stunning beauty and on-screen charisma, so apparent in "The Big Sleep". Thank you for this wonderful tribute.
