The name of the scheme derived from the Italian; solo (alone) and insieme (together), also describes its ethos; optimising the balance between independence ands collective life. The inspiring conversion of a redundant embroidery factory was delivered through the perseverance of 4 motivated friends; Elizabeth, Jeanette, Verena, and Bernadette, and the dedication of their architect. Together the group have taken control of their lives and embarked on a collective journey into old age together and with their new neighbours. They chose a building close to the centre of an attractive town, close to all of the amenities they would need in their future life together. They have extended the building to the rear with a steel structure which creates a vertical garden of walkways , trellises and vines which acts both a communal garden and a private garden space for each resident in each apartment.
