Peter joined Panorama as a reporter in 1980, when he already had a reputation as one of the foremost commentators on the Troubles. In 1981 he reported on the hunger strike campaign from the Maze prison outside Belfast, addressing the political and military consequences of this. In April 1985, he came under fire while filming the withdrawal of Israeli troops from South Lebanon.
Since the 9/11 attacks, Peter has focussed on the al-Qaeda terror network and Islamist extremism, making several Panorama specials on the issue. His most recent films include Terror in the Skies?, which examined the liquid bomb plot which paralysed global air travel, and Real Spooks - the UK's Security Services war on terrorists.
