An El Cajon Police Department officer and two civilians
were wounded Sunday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting, just south of
Interstate 8. A man set the house in the 1000 block of Prince Street, near Ann Street,
on fire, then came out shooting, wounding the officer, police told CBS8. The officer was taken to Sharp Memorial Hospital, CBS8 reported. His
condition is unknown. The fire was extinguished shortly before 7 p.m., with the assistance of
water-dropping helicopters. "We heard a shot," said Lourdes Troncoso, who lives on McWay Court,
one block south of the shooting scene. "I hear something that's unusual. I
hear some neighbor say a family was shot." Said Phil Sanchez, who also lives on McWay Court: "We just saw thick
black smoke. We thought it was a car fire. The next thing you know, sirens left
and right." Eastbound Interstate 8 was closed in El Cajon about 90 minutes, but was
reopened shortly after 7 p.m. McWay Court was evacuated. Several basketball players were locked inside a gym at El Cajon Valley
High School shortly after the shooting. One of the players, Terrence Ingram, said, "I've never seen police
officers with machine guns before." Officers from the El Cajon, San Diego, La Mesa, Chula Vista and National
City police departments and California Highway Patrol responded to the
shooting scene, along with deputies from the San Diego County Sheriff's
Department.
