Gary is a result of poor breeding. He has hip and elbow dysplasia. We took him to water therapy classes to help keep him limber and exercised, but the pain worsened. At 10/11 months old he got the FHO surgery on one hip and had both his elbows operated on as well.

I wanted to make this video because a lot of people have been asking how the surgery was and what to expect after it. I hope this helps!

*edit* Oct 2010 Gary passed away due to kidney failure. We were happy to have had him in our lives. RIP sweet boy.

  • This is rare, but my 4 year old chihuahua mix has this and everytime he wants to lay or stand up, he cries and it's heartbreaking to me </3 the vet told us that a surgery is good, but it's not guaranteed, yet I see your boy seem to feel better like you say. Is the surgery really worth it or should I put my dog to sleep? Thanks.

  • @pattylivinlyf It is worth it.

  • My boy has hip dysplasia.... He is getting refered for a hip replacement just wondering how your dogs life changed? Can he live a normal life with the surgery? Thanks

  • @emmyc27 a hip replacement is probably the most desireable option, while also being the most expensive. The recovery period will be tough, this is a major surgery, but honestly I think it will be worth it. He will have hips of steel (pun intended lol) and should be able to do everything that a normal dog can do.

Gary did not get a hip replacement, but the ball of his leg bone cut off so it didn't grind inside his hip socket. After he recovered he felt a lot better and ran and played more!

  • @8xXxAngelicDevilxXx8 That is definitely true, many dogs sit sloppy just out of laziness or habit. However, for my boy it was painful for him to sit properly for any more than 10 seconds or so. We tried teaching him to fix his sit when he was a puppy and he would usually whine and wasn't ably to do a sit stay in the proper position. For us it was a sign.

  • @zumie05 A lot of dogs will have that lazy sit though, it's not really relevant to hip displasia. I go to dog training classes and over half the dogs will sit sloppy. We call it a sloppy sit, and will nudge the knee to get them to 'sit straight' :) It could be a conisidence or maybe it could be related for this particular dog, but I don't think it is a 'sign' of HD IMO :)

  • Our rotti is going in for x ray this Monday, he is only 7 month old. If any one out there with experience in hip dis, please give me advice and hope. We love our rotti . Thanks to those idiot breeders, our dogs have to suffer. Hopefully he can recover after this.

  • this is a dream come true for me... my Rottie cannot sit properly, has a hard time standing up or sitting down, getting in a vehicle, up stairs, etc. We are having x-rays next week, and hopefully getting either stem cell injections or hip replacements. I dont care what I have to pay, she is only 20 months old and means more to me than anything. Your dog was beautiful, he was very handsome when he filled out. Very sad for his death... :( I hope my Sophia lives a long time

  • poor thing im scared if my one has but im not really shore haw much did this cost all up :(
