The New Avengers (1976): Gnaws

The 1960s TV series The Avengers was revived in two series' in 1976 and 1977. It was retitled The New Avengers and given a slightly different format with Steed aided by two agents - Purdey (Joanna Lumley) and Mike Gambit (Gareth Hunt).

In this episode from December 1976, an experimental growth chemical has been accidentally spilled into the sewer system creating a mysterious creature that's killing people off.

Keith Alexander (who played Keith Ford the communications officer at SHADO HQ in the 1970 series UFO) is also seen in this clip, as is Patrick Malahide in one of his first TV roles (now probably best known as Sergeant Chisholm in the 1980s series Minder.)

The title Gnaws is obviously meant to echo the title of the famous shark movie Jaws that had been released the year before.
