Hi there, how are you today?

----------------------
The words we use often express our own personal characters, don't you think so? ^0^
I sometimes see people on YT confusing what to say "I" in Japanese!
Actually there are many ways of saying "I" in Japanese and each of them are often having different images.
Today, I'm going to show you some COMMON examples of "I" in Japanese!

The pictures in this video are showing my images of each word. (I hope they help you easy to get the images of each word!)

余談ですが、私の地域では、自分のことを「おわ」と言う男性が結構います!「俺たち」の意で「おわっちゃ」とも言います。方言の一つに近いかもしれませんが。^^

Btw, many males in my area use the word "OWA" in informal situations ((I think they use "WATASHI" or "WATAKUSHI" (there might be some using "BOKU") in formal situations.)) ! This word, "OWA" , is so casual and I feel it kinda naughty, but cheerful and friendly. (Many things have both aspects ...this is the truth, isn't this?)Maybe, this word is a kind of dialect and people in other areas cannot understand if you use it!

私の主人は広島出身ですが、子供のころからずっと自分のことを「わし」と言っていて、広島ではそれが一般的だそうです。
また、関西では、男性がよく「わて」と言うそうです。性別や世代のみならず、地域ごとにも違いがあります!また、話す相手や場面によって言葉を使い分ける点も日本語の特徴的な部分です!
My husband is from Hiroshima, and uses "WASHI" in informal situations since he was a small child.

It seems that males in Kansai area often use "WATE" in informal situations.
It seems that each regions often have different ways besides generations, genders. Also we normally choice/use proper words according to the situations(formal or informal...)! That's interesting, isn't that?!

私は、自分のことを基本的には「わたし」と言っています。「わたくし」と言うほどの正式な場所/場面がほとんどありません・・・。でも、お中元やお歳暮のお礼のはがきなど書くときには、同じ「私」という漢字ですが、「わたくし」と読みながら書いています。^-^

I normally say WATASHI in informal situations/formal situations. (I'd say "WATAKUSHI" in very formal situations, but I hardly have very formal situations....
But when I write to superiors, I often use WATAKUSHI to be polite. The Kanji is the same as WATASHI, but I read it WATAKUSHI in the case.
(Sorry for this complicated explanation!)

Anyway, I hope you enjoy this video and get something! ^-^

  • very interesting and helpful video, thanks! Doesn't "uchi" mean also "home"? So a woman refers to herself as "home"? Sounds a bit strange to a western mind...

  • Hi Miyabi! I'm learning Japanese for fun (and on the hope of visiting soon!) and I find it kind-of funny that there is a formal "I" --since you are referring to yourself, would it seem pompous if you are not some high-ranking individual? It it more of a context thing, as in you may use it at a formal gathering? Thanks!

  • I always love your funky music! :D

  • I think those who use sessha have probably watched too many samurai anime :P

  • i like using あたし :)
