he was ambidextrous- a great baseball catcher and could drink you under the table or beat you at rolling coins down his knuckles. could sleep anywhere.

Absolutely the King of La Jolla...and Mr. Pipeline. Never met him but whenever I visit WindanSea I imagine Butch out there.

The best footage of BVA was pipeline Endless Summer check it out i dont think its posted but in my opinion one of the all time classics

Butch was a friend. Besides all the stories of him, he was foremost a very friendly and gregarious soul. He protected his friends and turf fiercely of course, but his heart was magnificent. His love of freedom and self expression-determination was a testament to the times. And as noted here, he will remain, Mr. Pipeline, and revered in Hawaii as a true fearless soul altho his own deamons drove him to escape himself in alcohol that resulted in his death. I'll love him always.
