We were locked in mortal combat, just as adrenaline-addled Leonidas and hubris-filled Xerxes met at the Battle of Thermopylae, when a relative handful of highly specialized Spartans held off a seemingly bottomless torque-pit of Persians for seven excruciating days.
Here we have the 2009 Toyota Prius gasoline-electric hybrid, embodying up-to-the-minute fuel-sipping methods and machinery intended to take us immaculately into a spotless future. In the other lane, the newly introduced 2009 Volkswagen Jetta TDI turbodiesel, a rolling relic of tried-and-true yester-tech locomotion (upon whose sooty breath the Industrial Revolution itself was built) that has been remastered, reengineered and reintroduced to be meaner, cleaner and more efficient than ever.
But the battle left us weary — done in by the struggle and tired of each other like Siamese twins on prom night.

diesel engines will last ten times longer than a gas engine as well. plus the hybrid batteries cost $3000 to replace and you still leave behind all of that worn out useless, toxic battery acid.
Electric is the way to go! The Earth will run out of diesel the same way as petrol. I dont know why many car makers still bother investing in researching diesel engines. The diesel technology they develop now barely have a future in the long run.
I have a 1997 TDi tuned and custom exhaust system and getting over 47mpg even with my lead foot. Bare in mind its the MK3 jetta thats a 1.9L turbo not the new 2.0L turbo.
The most fuel efficient car across North America is not a hybrid. Its a diesel. A Volkswagen Jetta TDI Clean Diesel, to be exact. Making its way across the nation and into a world records, a Jetta TDI recently achieved 58.82 MPG during a successful 9,419 mile bid for the lowest fuel consumption across the Continental United States. Despite being officially rated at just 30 MPG city and 41 MPG highway by the EPA, the Jetta TDI managed 14 percent better than the previous record of 51.58 MPG.
My wife has gotten 55 mpg over the last 6,000 plus miles without even trying. I reset it after that because to tell you the truth, when you get mileage like that, you stop caring. A year ago when gas cost more then milk, I checked to see what I was getting driving her 2007 Prius to work, since I stopped driving my RL because of high fuel cost. I was getting between 66.5 - 69.7 mpg, on my 30 mile round tips to work and back. The Jetta TDI and Prius are great at not using to much fuel.
As for the TDI getting "WAY more than 34 mpg" well... most drivers do get around 41mpg with the TDI, just like must drivers of the Prius get around 55mpg, ever though the Prius is rated at only 50mpg.
The EPA rating is a standardized test that is not changed from car to car. EVERY car gets tested the same way.
IF you do the speed limit with no hard take offs then your rating will always be higher.
All the cars I am about to list are all very nice cars.
