What Jigsaw meant is their instincts where Survival of the fittest. He implored they do the opposite, and use teamwork. They could have gone through all the traps in Saw V without killing or losing anyone. Instead, they misinterpreted jigsaw's warning and didn't heed his advice, and as a result, almost lost everyone.
