The TASCAM DR-680 8-track portable digital recorder makes it easy to get professional-sounding live, location, and surround recordings anywhere. Using SD card media, the DR-680 can record Broadcast WAV audio at up to 24-bit/96kHz quality — you can even record stereo audio at up to 192kHz. This compact recorder includes six mic inputs (with phantom power and 60dB of gain), S/PDIF connectivity, a built-in mixer, auto-recording mode, onboard editing capability, and a pre-recording feature.
@cast390 What?? you obviously missed the point on what this recorder is all about!

@cast390 a computer is a jack of all trades ,but the Tascam is a master of one,as for walking about with a laptop and an audio interface and making it work for 8 hours without recharging well you will need a bloody big battery.

@cast390 pc's designed for recording multitrack audio don't cost less than a thousand bucks. You can buy a cheap pc but then you'll have to upgrade the soundcard, one that has 6 inputs like this Tascam has, install an extra HDD add more RAM. Then you'll have to deal with the latency issues, driver/software problems and the other stuff that go with recording on a pc. Anyway this is primarily a field recorder which means you can put it in a bag and record stuff anywhere. Try that with a pc.

@cast390 Computers are not fun anymore since Microsoft made them toy-like with icon based interfaces.

Like we really need another hardware recorder. FAIL....For the amount of cash you spend on this(maybe a little more),you could buy a computer and have 10x's the the power this toy has.
