what ive always done is put my headphones on...then move the mic around till i find "the sweet spot"
..you will hear it,listen for it.

All good but , if the stage is small and the band is around 110 DB and you sing at 95
or 100 db , you have to stuff the damn mic as close to your mouth as you can, or in most cases the vocal mic becomes an overhead for the cymbals . On TV maybe the sound check didn't get it right so in order to get themselves comfy they stuff it in there mouth .
