I know this was old, but I thought I had replied to this a while ago, if you're still curious it was really fast pitch shifting of the resonant filter audio effect that I faded in and out on different layers.

Yes, mostly keyboard instruments; synthesizer and vibraphone most frequently.

Yes I did use a few plug-ins for this round at least. Really the most abundant methods of creating the more impressive of these effects though were using lots of composite modes and rerendering parts of the video on top of each other in multiple parts.
