@someone20ify Murdoch had only seconds to act. He thought he could avoid hitting the burg by both turning the ship and, not stopping, but reversing the ships engines. What he failed to take into account was that the ship would have turned much quicker if it was going faster. If he let the ship run into the berg head on, only one compartment would have been flooded. Or he could have ordered full steam ahead and hard to port and the ship would have for sure missed it.

@LaskaSkywalker not to mention he was much more willing to let men into the lifeboats. I

if chuck norris had been onboard he would have picked the iceberg up and put it in his drink :)

I wonder if a ship made out of titanium would be able to take a hit from an iceberg.

PICK UP U BASTARDS that's funny
I always loved that Mr. Murdock
First he tried to make the captain drive slower and keep a better watch, then he was on the bridge trying everything to avoid a collision thinking of a possible way out within seconds and then when everbody lost control and panic took over he was the only officer who kept his cool and taught his crew within seconds how to handle the lifeboats though he himself never did that before.
To me this guy was the real captain of the Titanic in that movie :)

This is my favorite scene in the movie. I just love seeing everyone working together to try and get the ship to turn.
