I just need to know the first 20. My teacher said that is all you will need to know at my school. I don't understand why we only need to the know 20, why not all, or none at all?

@michalchik Hi. Memorizing periodic table is pretty stupid idea, I agree. But... As chemistry student and later teacher of chemistry I found it is very practical to know from where certain element come. If you want to explain chemistry bound, you must know how many electrons are on external orbitals and if you have memorized elements of main groups of periodic table, you can understand what is going on in chemistry bond, much easier and faster. So it is not totally useless. Cheers!
@michalchik
i dont think it's as much the teacher's fault as it is the curriculum's fault. you're supposed to learn all kinds of crap you never need again. one of the most hilarious things is having to have a nice scientific calculator to use in regular class, but having to calculate everything with pen and paper in exams.
...or, having to memorize exact temperatures, pressures and minutes it takes for sterilization of something, and then only needing to press a button on the machine. :P

@yellowmetalcyborg
we use technetium every day. :P
no seriously, if you work in nuclear medicine, it's the most common element you'll have in your hands every day when working - even more so than the elements your lunch fork are made of!
but still, memorizing it is rather weird indeed... oh well.
hey, i gotta admit i like knowing it, though. but... i guess people who learn Pi to 150+ digits just for fun are worse, still... :P
