(featuring Colin Wilkie and Shirley Hart on vocals and Joki Freund on saxophones)

Seventh and final track of the album Wild Goose (1969), an excellent hidden gem - a truly original mixture of folk and avant-garde / free jazz. A bit different from the stuff I usually post, but you'll probably like it...

"Sweet Primroses" is an old English love song which Colin and Shirley normally sing unaccompanied. The tonic, maintained throughout the piece by part of the wind section, suggests the drone of the bagpipes. During the vocals, there is a very free accompaniment by Günter Lenz on bass and this element of freedom s continued by Heinz Sauer's improvisation, which lacks any strict measure but maintains its contact with the theme through its constant reference to the tonic.
